In the first book in the Liz Ogilvie-Smythe Provincetown "Deadly" series, British expatriate (secret "refugee from a wealthy family") having contracted malaria on her first archaeological dig in South America, after graduating from Oxford, is betwixt and between as to where her life is going next. When she inherits the Cranberry Inn out at the very tip of Cape Cod, the decision is made for her by Fate. Why not try her hand at inn keeping? After all, she once took a summer course at the world-renowned Cordon Bleu in Paris and loves to cook. Making friends with another expat from home, wise cracking Daphne, whose own past is enigmatic and shadowy, things are looking good. (Be prepared for lots of fun British-speak between these two.) When the village curmudgeon Edwin Snow III is found lying on the newly fallen snow at the foot of the Provincetown Pilgrim Monument, the police assume it is suicide. Not so cozy mystery fan Liz who spots something incongruous and unlikely at the site. Thus begins her new calling as an amateur sleuth. When the handsome Irish cop James Finneran finally admits his own doubts, the two of them take on a convoluted, controversial investigation looking for a murderer who is as elusive and quixotic as spring in New England. Their investigation is stalled, re-directed, misdirected and obscured by an inanimate object with a seeming power all its own--a crystal ball. Foodies will love the kitchen talk and anyone who has ever wanted to visit Provincetown can expect a painterly virtual tour along with lots of quirky characters and twisted trails leading to dead ends. If you like a mystery that keeps it most vital secrets until the last page, this is it. |
